I have been here on Bali for a little more than one week now. Before I came here I thought this first time would be completely different than what it turned out to be. I thought live on Bali would be about hanging out on the beach and be learning to surf now. It has not been like that! These days has been most about work and setting myself up in a new place.
Work work work
My contract with XMS Penvision is 20 hours a week now in July, which is harder to do than I thought. To be available for questions from the other developers, to be available for support issues, to be available for partners means that you don’t have that much time over for development yourself. As a team we are doing great progress, but I want to do more developing!
I have forced myself to put in some time in what I plan to live of in the future as well. I want to see how interesting I can make this blog and by doing that I want to be transparent about my life, positive and negative things. A step towards that is that I have put up a spreadsheet where I present all my expenses. You find it here or through through the menus on this site. The plan is too later somehow show my incomes as well. I am not sure in what form that will be in yet though, but I have to summarize July first anyway.
Another thing I have done through this past week is to get a page together which sort of show a little about the service I plan to provide to partners of the company I am working for now. I wrote more about this idea in an earlier post about my business plan for the coming months. My former colleagues at XMS Penvision now have somewhere to point clients that have projects that they are not interested in themselves. There will mostly be smaller projects (if there will be any at all :o) regarding customizations and optimizations of Formidable (the platform I work with for XMS Penvision) installations.
I moved in to a villa
Have I only been working this past week? It kind of feels like, but it is not only that. I have managed to get into the life here a little, I now where I can eat cheap, I have a place to live and I have rented a motorbike.
The place I found is an 8 bedroom Villa that is housed by me, an Indonesian girl and a lot of Germans. They all study at the university here, I haven’t talked a lot to all of them yet, but at least some of them seem to finish of their studies now and will leave soon. My room is really small (cheap though) which is fine, but I will probably move into one of the other rooms when they get free, it is not that much more expensive and they are bigger and nicer.
Saturday night I caught up with my friend Sam from New Zealand who has been on the island for a couple of weeks on holiday. I met him when I lived in Dublin. I saw him last time just over a year ago when I visited him on his farm on the southern tip of the south island of New Zealand. We have met in 4 different occasions (lived together in Dublin, traveled South America for 3 months, i visited him in New Zealand and now Bali) and it is pretty cool that all these places are on different continents.
It really feels good now when I have most of what I need in place and I can get some routines and structure in my life again. I think I need that to make all this work in a good way.
